Then Stick Around …

Are you ready now to start playing gypsy jazz guitar, make quick and easy progress, and start jamming and gigging? Together we can absolutely get you there.

I love playing gypsy jazz guitar and spreading the music through teaching. If you Google me, you'll see I've been in the scene and playing this music for many years. I'm committed to it heart and seoul.

Through the years of playing and teaching, I've developed a system to teach others to play gypsy jazz guitar in a fast and fun way that doesn't rely on knowledge of music theory or past playing experience. These books are the result.

If you dream of playing this music, of jamming with friends, and even giging on the road, then I really want to share these books with you. They will work for you and I guarantee that.

It's Time To "Just Start Playing"

My big breakthrough came when out of necessity; my brother Kevin Nolan joined my gypsy jazz band, the Robin Nolan Trio on extremely short notice. At the time, he had literally NO EXPERIENCE playing gypsy rhythm guitar. He could play a bit of guitar, but he was not a guitarist and had never played gypsy jazz guitar before.

So my challenge was to help Kevin get up to speed playing our repertoire in just a few weeks.  To make the challenge even greater, Kevin was still living in Birmingham while I was in Amsterdam. I had to teach Kevin remotely by faxing him sheets of song notation and instructions for him to practice. He didn’t know how to read sheet music, so I had to make things as simple and straightforward as possible without getting bogged down with a lot of theory. Honestly, I didn’t know if this would work, but we had to move fast because we had gigs coming up.

To make a long story short, Kevin learned the songs in our set list in short order and by the time he arrived in Amsterdam 6 weeks later, he was ready to gig. Now, years later he is widely recognized as one of the world’s best gypsy jazz rhythm guitarists outside of the gypsy community.

If you know Kevin or have seen him play then you know what a great rhythm guitarist he’s become.

The experience of teaching Kevin so much in such a short time made me realize that most teaching methods just don’t get people playing the music and having fun quickly… Even though my methods were unorthodox, man they worked like charm.

I was so excited by this breakthrough that I began sharing the method with my other friends and students. You see, I knew this had worked great for my brother… but would it work for everyone?

I had to find out.

The results were outrageously successful. I was delighted to discover that this method of learning gypsy jazz guitar can be used by anyone to start playing great tunes almost instantly. Guitarists from around the world have proved this to be true.

The heart of the method is the idea that you should JUST START PLAYING. Theory is great and has its place, but when you’re just starting out; it can be intimidating and actually prevent you from every getting started. Just start playing – this is how the gypsies do it and this is how learned.

Here’s something you can use right now…

3 Ways To Improve Your Playing Right Now…
Remember Just Start Playing

I'm going to share three important tips that will immediately improve your ability to play gypsy jazz guitar and get you started off right.

Best of all, they are simple. But don’t let their simplicity fool you.

You see, if you don’t master these three things first, you’ll never get the groove of a gypsy jazz player. There will always be something missing from your sound. It will never swing the way that makes gypsy jazz so intoxicating to listen to.

Yet, practice these three simple things and get them handled, and you’ll start to tap into the swing that is the true heart of gypsy jazz. If you have a guitar nearby, grab it now and give your playing some gypsy groove.

1. Keep Your Strumming Hand Floating

You need to keep your strumming hand floating, not leaning on the guitar. It took me years to get this, but a floating wrist will give you the power and dexterity you need to pull this music off properly.

To develop this skill, imagine striking a match and then waving it out. That’s the movement of the wrist your looking to achieve

2. Use Your Foot To Tap Out The Rhythm

This music is all about the rhythm so be sure to have your body in synch with the timing. Tapping your foot will help you internalize the beat and stop you from falling out of time.

Though this may seem obvious, many new players completely miss this simple way to get in the groove.

In my experience I’ve even seen guys start out playing with their legs crossed or with their bodies not really moving and these are most likely the ones not swinging.

Tap to the rhythm and stay in time. Feel the music with your body. Really feel it. That’s what this music is all about… To get into the groove start with tapping your foot.

3. Realize - The Rhythm Is The Backbone

The rhythm guitar plays the most important role and in fact defines gypsy jazz.

Playing good rhythm guitar is essential to the overall sound.

It is the drums of this music and therefore the backbone. Get this aspect handled well before attempting to play lead.

Think rhythm, rhythm, and more rhythm, the beat is everything. Use a metronome to improve your timing. This will really help you get a deeper understanding of this music.

Keep these three points in mind every day while learning and practicing and you’ll have a great head start playing this style of guitar.

If your last name is Reinhardt or Rosenberg , it might not be for you.

If you’re already a profession gypsy jazz guitarist, gigging around the world and signing autographs, you can probably get by without it.

But seriously , there are several common situations that many who are new to gypsy jazz guitar experience.

Read through the list below… and if you find that you identify with ANY ONE OR MORE of these perspectives, I really recommend you grab this program now and use it.

I designed this program to get you playing gypsy jazz guitar right now – today.

You don’t need any previous experience playing guitar or learning musical theory. In fact we avoid musical theory completely and get straight to playing, approaching the music the way the gypsies do around the camp fire.

I know because I’ve sat at those campfires playing for hours with friends like Jimmy and Stochelo Rosenberg and Angelo Debarre. I’m thankful to call those guys friends and to have their respect. I’ve experienced the passion with which they share the music, learn from each other, and incorporate different styles of playing in a way only possible with gypsy jazz.

These books will bring that experience to you.

I put these books out there to share my passion for gypsy jazz guitar with students around the world and I’ll only feel successful when you are as well.

Reason #1: You’ll start playing gypsy jazz guitar right away without needing any previous knowledge or experience.

Here Are A Few Of The Comments I Get From
Students Around The World...

“Your books offer a quick, simple to read and logical way to learn the core of the tunes. The gig book is a must. It opens up a world of music ready to explore and evolve in. Alot of fun.”

John Sergo, Sweden

"The first book I got was the one with Djangology, Minor Swing, etc. In a very short time I was playing the heads and improvising on these important tunes of the genre. I especially liked the way the chords are shown in their authentic shapes and inversions, the way the real gypsies play them. This really changed my approach to harmony on guitar and these chords have become the ones I use all the time. Book two, with the exposition of Django's approach to Rhythm Changes, also rocked my world, as did the tips on octave playing. I also got "Essential Gypsy Jazz Guitar Licks" somewhere around this time, and wow! I must have played through that book twice a day for two years! I can't thank you enough. I love this music and you have made it accessible. Your books and play-alongs are the best stuff out there. Period.”

Steve Summers, United States

"I got the first RN book in 2002 October. Now it is 2009 and I am a solo player of the Hot Club of Hungary, we have 2 CDs, and 2008 May I did what Robin recommended in the first book! I quit my daily job! :) Now, I am professional musician! I can not thank you enough to make my dream comes true Robin! God bless you and your family! Ákos"

Ákos Tóth, Hungary

"Robin and his materials have been a big part of my gypsy jazz study and development as a guitar player. I am currently leading a band in Colorado and have six gigs booked for January 2009 - and have dates thru June. Besides his course materials, having had a chance to meet him and get to know him a little at Django in June 2008 was a fantastic and motivating experience for me. ~Markos - The Cottonwood Club"

Mark Mortensen, United States

"No bullshit, straight to the music. Thank you for your help. I'm ready for the next tune please"

Eddie Rosicky, United States

"A quickstart in learning gypsy guitar tunes by heart. It helps you to learn by playing instead of learn by reading from books."

Adriaan Wagenaar, Netherlands

"Truly, if it were not for your books AND CD's, I would not be playing Gypsy Jazz Guitar or any other Guitar other than First position , self taught Chord accompaniment. Same goes for my wife!"

Dennis Blasdell, United States

"The greatest thing is to have the Play-along MP3 to play with. You get the feel of actually playing with a group."

Chuck Buchanan, United States

"I have been able to learn many of the songs from your gig book and course books by myself and after about 1 year of practicing on my own, I started playing these songs with a piano player and we now are playing out around the area we live in as a small swing duo. Thanks a lot for your straightforward approach to learning the songs. I feel that that having one page for the correct chord voicing and another for the basic melody in tab have been invaluable for quickly learning these songs."

Dwaine Majkrzak, United States

"Hi Robin, I've been playing guitar for 20+ years and gypsy jazz for a few. When I started to play gypsy style guitar, your books and CDs were invaluable as an introduction to the style. I have since attended a couple of your workshops, and they are great. I congratulate you on your continued development of teaching materials! I wish you nothing but success as a musician and an educator."

Brian Grossman, United States

"Allow me.......... Robin Nolan is the primo GJG (Gypsy Jazz Guitar) teacher. He's been doing this before anyone else, plus he makes it simple for the absolute beginner. Robin is THE source! - webmaster@gypsyjazzguitar.com"

Don Price, United States

"What I would say is that the approach taken in the books is an unqualified success for me personally. Not only is it easy to pick-up and instantly tangible by having the backing tracks to work with but it has also educated me musically more in one year than the previous 25. I play rhythm for a lead guitarist doing standards who rarely lets me solo due to my shortcomings. Since practicing the lead licks book every day my solo work is beginning to come together such that some of my efforts are very nearly complimented. For a non-reader of music it’s been a real boon and it helps you play better rhythm, better lead, hear the changes and feel the swing. This feeds you in other styles of music you play and the benefits are not confined to gypsy jazz. If you want to give us more Robin then bring it on."

Russell Pay, United Kingdom

"A lot of fun!"

Thomas Glöckner, Germany

"From learning how to play gypsy jazz from your books, i have also learned a great deal about playing with other people, it has given confidence to play solid rhythm and melodies and learn how to solo. Without your books, my quest to learn gypsy jazz and become a fine musician would be less evolved"

Brandon Raby, United States

"Robin Nolan's Book are the BEST instruction books I have ever encountered.

He has made the seemingly impossible totally doable. His Chord voicings and shapes give a really authentic sound, and his chord shapes are repeated throughout his series, so there is remarkably little to learn to gain an authentic sound. With the play along CD's it gives you a sounding board to chart progress. Bottom line, I exceeded My every expectation.

Thank You Robin Nolan"

Dennis Backstrom, United States

“The books are awesome. They have re-ignited my passion for playing…Thanks!”

Jeff Katzman

“I just have to compliment you on the exemplary job you have done on the book/CD of Gypsy Jazz tunes. I have made more progress in my playing in the last two weeks than I had in the last two years!”

Dave Harper, Canada

“The CD and Book are INCREDIBLE!! I can’t recommend this enough to my students. ”

Paul Mehling – Hot Club de San Francisco

“Your book is tremendous. It is a great accomplishment and is sure to help players gain a greater understanding of this genre of music.”

Neil Anderson – Pearl Django

“They are simply the next best thing on the planet to sitting in with the Quintette du Hot Club de France!!”

Archtop Eddy

“These books and accompanying CDs are an essential purchase by every gypsy jazzer.”

Andy MacKenzie – Just Jazz Guitar

“A fantastic job. People have been waiting for this for a long time!”

Mary and Peter Honcoop – Rosenberg Trio webmasters

“They have become an icon in the gypsy jazz community and are now the required reading for anyone playing in the style.”

Steve Royall, United Kingdom

“Could not believe how helpful your book was…like others I’ve struggled with the music – especially chording and it clicked on the first pass through!”

Steve Mendelsohn, United States

“Many thanks for the speedy deliver of the books. Glancing through them I understand the comments I’ve read. The simplicity is exquisite, the artwork is well done and the attention to detail is refreshing. Thank you for investing the effort and commitment necessary to share your knowledge of Jazz Manouche.”

John Gunn, United States
