My big breakthrough came when out of necessity; my brother Kevin Nolan joined my gypsy jazz band, the Robin Nolan Trio on extremely short notice. At the time, he had literally NO EXPERIENCE playing gypsy rhythm guitar. He could play a bit of guitar, but he was not a guitarist and had never played gypsy jazz guitar before.

He didn’t know how to read sheet music, so I had to make things as simple and straightforward as possible without getting bogged down with a lot of theory. Honestly, I didn’t know if this would work, but we had to move fast because we had gigs coming up.

To make a long story short, Kevin learned the songs in our set list in short order and by the time he arrived in Amsterdam 6 weeks later, he was ready to gig. Now, years later he is widely recognized as one of the world’s best gypsy jazz rhythm guitarists outside of the gypsy community.

You need to keep your strumming hand floating, not leaning on the guitar. It took me years to get this, but a floating wrist will give you the power and dexterity you need to pull this music off properly.

2. Use Your Foot To Tap Out The Rhythm

This music is all about the rhythm so be sure to have your body in synch with the timing. Tapping your foot will help you internalize the beat and stop you from falling out of time.

In my experience I’ve even seen guys start out playing with their legs crossed or with their bodies not really moving and these are most likely the ones not swinging.

Tap to the rhythm and stay in time. Feel the music with your body. Really feel it. That’s what this music is all about… To get into the groove start with tapping your foot.

3. Realize - The Rhythm Is The Backbone

The rhythm guitar plays the most important role and in fact defines gypsy jazz.

Playing good rhythm guitar is essential to the overall sound.

It is the drums of this music and therefore the backbone. Get this aspect handled well before attempting to play lead.

Think rhythm, rhythm, and more rhythm, the beat is everything. Use a metronome to improve your timing. This will really help you get a deeper understanding of this music.
